A simple check before you send money.

We're introducing Confirmation of Payee to help make online payments safer.

It checks whether the account name and account number match before you send money, helping you avoid mistakes and spot potential scams.

If something doesn’t look right, you’ll be alerted so you can double-check the details before continuing.

How it works

When you enter an account name and account number, Confirmation of Payee securely checks whether the details match the information held by the receiving bank.

The information used for the check is encrypted and used only to complete the matching process.

You may receive one of the following responses:

CoP Match

Match

The details match, but it's still important to make sure you know who you're paying and why.

CoP Partial Match

Partial match

The name you have entered is not an exact match with the account number. This could happen if there’s a small typo or a shortened name has been used. Double-check the details before continuing.

CoP No Match

Not a match

The account name and number do not match. This may mean the account number or name is incorrect. If you receive a “no match” response, stop and check the details before continuing.

Why it matters

Scams that trick people into sending money to the wrong account are becoming more common.

Confirmation of Payee helps you check that the account details you've entered match the account you're intending to pay before money leaves your account.

It can help you:

  • Reduce the risk of sending money to the wrong account
  • Spot mistakes before a payment is made
  • Be more aware of unusual or suspicious payment requests
  • Add another safeguard against impersonation and scam activity

While Confirmation of Payee helps make payments safer, it's still important to stay cautious when making payments online.

Tips to stay safe

Even if a payment shows as a “match”, always:

  • Make sure you know who you’re paying
  • Be cautious of urgent payment requests
  • Double-check account details carefully
  • Stop and question anything that feels unusual

If someone tells you to ignore a “no match” warning, take extra care.

  • The full account name
